Diocesan Links

Historically, South Rwenzori Diocese has had strong links to churches in the United Kingdom and United States.
United Kingdom
Church of Wales
In 2004 it was determined that there was a great need for a school in the rural area of Kamasasa on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. St. John's Church of Uganda Primary School was built over the next five years with funds raised by Rev. Jayne Buckle's three parishes in North Wales: St Mary's Church Beddgelert, St Twrog's Church Maentwrog, and Holy Trinity Church Penrhyndeudraeth, all within Bangor Diocese. They have also provided funds for construction of a ``Mission House'' which is located near St. Paul's Cathedral in Kasese.
Romsey Deanery
Since 1988, a strong link has existed between Romsey Deanery and South Rwenzori Diocese. Many projects have arisen from this link. For more information, please see the Romsey Deanery Overseas Mission Committee web site.
Canon Jehosaphat Bwalhuma, the Diocesan Secretary, visited Romsey Deanery in June 2014, particularly visiting schools and health facilities.
Tools for Self Reliance has been working in the Kasese District for over ten years, helping train local unemployed individuals in carpentry and tailoring, and then providing them with 'start-up' kits for them to return to their communities and actually begin work.
Education Uganda is another programme which was begun between the two dioceses. This immensely successful project has introduced the use of slates into the classrooms of schools in Uganda, and trained the teachers of several
schools to use them. The result has been extremely positive.
Glossop Deanery
The Deanery link with South Rwenzori Diocese in Western Uganda has been in place now for the last 20 years and has been an encouragement to many and provided opportunity to share our Christian Ministry together.
In 1992, Janet Muhindo made her first of many visits to the Deanery. She was in the UK with Church Mission Society. This started a fruitful engagement approximately every 3 years with the deanery during which time she was ordained and also made many friends in our churches. The visits were principally funded by the Church Mission Society.
In 1995, we hosted Rev. Uzziah Kiraghe, who went on to work in hospital management and chaplaincy in Uganda and subsequently in the Canada and the U.S. He has since returned to Uganda. This too was funded by the Church Mission
Society.
A group from the Deanery visited South Rwenzori in 1997. There the team met Simon Challand, a doctor being supported by Charlesworth Church. The funding for this visit was by the individuals concerned and their churches. A diary of
their travels was later sold in aid of the South Rwenzori Diocese.
In 1998, Bishop Zebedee K. Masereka of South Rwenzori and his wife Stella came to the Deanery and stayed for a week.
In 2000, Hannington Kule a teacher from Kilembe Senior School, spent 4 weeks in Glossop Deanery and subsequently returned to Uganda. In 2005 he became a SENIOR INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS with the EDUCATION STANDARDS AGENCY (ESA). Glossop Deanery sponsored him from 2005 - 2008 to read for his M.A. in Development Studies at Uganda Martyrs University.
In 2004, South Rwenzori's new bishop Very Rev'd. Jackson Nzerebende Tembo of South Rwenzori Diocese stayed in the deanery for a week visiting parishes and clergy both in the deanery and diocese. As a result of this visit the Bishop of Derby's Harvest Appeal 2004 supported work in South Rwenzori Diocese.
In 2007, Geoff Carrier from Hayfield attended the graduation of Doreen, a girl he and Anne sponsored, and continued deepening our link with the diocese. In 2009 he returned for her marriage and whilst there set up a charity 'Sand
Filter Aid' which is increasing the supply of clean water to those in South Rwenzori Diocese.
In 2007, the deanery made connection with Head teacher Rosie Giles from Dorset who regularly travels out to help and support Rev. Canon Janet Muhindo and we formed a link with her in her ministry. Having now retired she is currently working with Janet in Uganda.
In 2008, Rev. Canon Janet Muhindo made her sixth visit to the Deanery and continued her ministry of encouragement amongst us. It is anticipated that Janet may return again in 2010 or 2011. Steve Mitchell also became a trustee of
the Church of Uganda Children's Ministry UK which seeks to provide for Janet in her ministry in Uganda.
All Saints' Church, Lindfield
The link between South Rwenzori Diocese and All Saints' Church, Lindfield started when All Saints sent Rob and Jen
Morris, and their children to work under TEAR Fund / Africa Inland Mission / Church of Uganda at Kagando in 1978. This was actually before South Rwenzori Diocese existed -- there was then just Rwenzori Diocese, with its headquarters
in Fort Portal, with the then bishop, Eustace Kamanyire. Rob had the privilege of being a member of the committee organising the enthronement of Bishop Zebedee Masereka in Kasese, with the inception of the new Diocese, South
Rwenzori, at which President Obote came and spoke. It was a time of great disorder, change and hope.
When Rob and Jen Morris and their family returned to the UK in 1985, All Saints' under its vicar, John Mckechnie, decided to maintain its link with the Diocese and this has been continued by his successor, Canon James Clarke.
Since then various members of All Saints' have paid visits in support of the diocese. These include:
- Derek Osborn and Ken Eldred to help on business matters
- In 1999 Derek (again) and Jean-Claude Barrault led a team of young people who gave general help including soem manual support in building the Cathedral
- Ken and Helen Eldred to help the Kasese Women's Learning Centre
- Margaret and Jean-Claude Barrault have made numerous visits to set up and later extend the dentistry unit at kagando Hospital
- In 2007 Christine and Robin Meredith-Jones visited to help the children under the leading of Canon Beatrice with their drama shows. they followed this up with a sponsored reading of the gospels to raise funds for the Jerusalem Hall (Children's Cathedral)
- Richard, Elaine and Alexander Browning visited in July 2008 to assist the microfinance charity Five Talents working within the diocese. Richard and Elaine Browning renewed links with the diocese by visits in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
The support for the Diocese continues with the following members leading special interest groups:
Richard and Elaine Browning - Ropeholders for the diocese as a whole and linking with Five Talents UK
Rob and Jen Morris (and Dave Lyth) - Kagando hospital
Margaret and Jean-Claude Barrault - the dentistry unit at Kagando
Clive Dilloway - the theological college that is being set up by Canon Benson at Kisinga
All Saints' generally - the support of theological students at Uganda Christian University and Bishop Barham
University College and lay reader students at Kisinga Divinity College.
